The "A-CURE" (A Community United to React to an Epidemic) program was initially started just to inform the community of HIV/AIDS through education. Then community members began to evolve the idea into something bigger and better. Our primary objectives are to educate students about HIV/AIDS, the environment, and healthy decision making skills. We also want to build a clean and safe community. To do this, we would like to build a new playground and community gathering area in a small area of our town that is greatly neglected. This playground would not only serve as a place for children and families to gather and communicate; it will also serve as a memorial and constant reminder of those who have died of AIDS and that we need to continue to do work to stop this epidemic before it stops us. Our plan starts with teachers and other community leaders being involved in an official training to be prepared to educate about HIV/AIDS and given the resources they need. Once this is completed they will teach students, parents, and other community members about this epidemic in several small sessions. Youth Leaders will also go from school to school during summer camps to hold short but informative information sessions and activities with the students to teach about the environment. This will start a process of helping to recruite volunteers to help with the clean-up days we will have each month. These clean-up days will focus on a different part of the community each time in hopes to keep all garbage off the streets. Our final and big event for both the environment and HIV/AIDS awareness is to open this playground and community gathering area. At this event we will have several activities going on. This area will include playground equipment, garbage cans, benches, and a small monument to those who have died of AIDS. This area will be completely built by community volunteers and materials will be provided by companies at a slightly discounted rate. We are asking for funding for this playground not only because we want to have something new and fun for our community but we also want to help promote a community of beauty and cleanliness and we want to give the community something permanent that everytime they pass they will be reminded of the epidemic that is taking over our country.
