Info about the A Healthier Future for Children

This project will meet the health and fitness needs of teenagers at a boarding school in Bulgaria. The school’s children are between the ages of 12 and 16. Although most of the children are not technically orphans, a large percentage of them lack the care of their parents. Many parents have left Bulgaria to find work in Western Europe due to economic hardships and have subsequently abandoned their children. The children in this home have behavioral problems that stem from a poor home life, lack of parental care, and poor physical and mental health. In addition to these problems, the majority of the children are part of ethnic minorities, such as Roma and Turkish. Individuals from minority groups are routinely marginalized in Bulgarian society, and often lack knowledge about or access to quality education, healthcare and job opportunities.

These young people will be given an opportunity to learn about personal health in a structured setting with the help of a fitness instructor and fitness equipment. The main focus of the project will be weekly training sessions with the teens on various themes such as fitness, nutrition, life skills, sexual health, decision making and personal values. The project will include the purchase of various fitness equipment, educational materials, and the weekly employment of a fitness/health instructor for two months. Contributions have already been given from businesses and individuals in the region and the children and staff are now looking to sponsors in America to help fund this project.
