Beth Hain served in Kardjali Bulgaria in the Eastern Rhodope mountains from 1998-2000 as Business Development (later program changed to Community Development) volunteer. Working with a group called the Regional Economic Development and Investment Agency (REDIA - http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/2866/redia.html) initially under the leadership of Ilko Vakarelov and later Anita Tagarova, Director, the Municipality with Mayor (http://www.kardjali.bg), and assisting with several other agencies and projects regionally, Beth did work for the community. Having lived in the city center in the Rila complex, she saw the school Gymnasium "Otez Paisiy" catch on fire.

Beth also assisted with incoming and ongoing peace corps training with train-the-trainer training for Bulgarian teachers working with newly arriving volunteers and project management for business and environmental volunteers and their host counterparts.

Beth left Bulgaria unexpectedly toward the final months of her service due to a family illness. Her father was diagnosed with a brain tumor and eventually passed in May 2001. However, Beth did do the unexpected. She brought home a local and married him in Atlanta in the fall of 2000. Raim Habil is a Bulgaria Turk of the village Gluhar, Kardjali and since 2003, Beth and Raim have lived in Greater Washington DC. Their son Adem Hain Habil was born in May 2007.
