Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) is a weeklong multi-ethnic summer camp that brings together 80 high school-aged women from all over Macedonia. The goal of the camp is to empower young women from Macedonia to become active leaders in their communities by providing them with leadership opportunities, and information and training not found in traditional educational environments. The camp curriculum focuses on 8 different thematic components: civil society, women’s studies, life choices, the world around me, leadership, artistic expression, recreation and teambuilding. The Camp GLOW curriculum and activities are taught by young women from Macedonia with assistance from Peace Corps volunteers. The Macedonian staff is comprised of 14 exceptional young women-leaders who have previously attended the camp as participants and are now in leadership positions such as Junior Counselors, Senior Counselors and Administrative and Program Leaders. The main cost of this camp is food and lodging for the participants and program leaders. All staff volunteer their time, skills and additional materials throughout the entire year, but most importantly during the duration of the camp. The 80 participants each contribute to the project by paying a small fee (about $7.00) and paying for their transportation to and from the camp site ($30). Camp GLOW host country national staff and the local partnering organization organize an annual fundraiser which contributes about $250-$300 towards supplies. Camp GLOW respectfully requests assistance from the Peace Corps Partnership Program for $4,469.35 to fund the campers’ meals and lodging for one week at Camp GLOW. Note: This summary was provided by a Peace Corps Volunteer and the community administering this project.
