Info about the Construction of a Community Library for Elementary School Teachers and Students

The first objective of this project is to construct, furnish and supply a public library for elementary school students and teachers in a city in Nicaragua. The second objective is to educate these individuals in the availability and use of library resources.

The library will be located at the second-largest primary school in the area. Given its location in the northern periphery of the city, the school mainly serves communities of low socio-economic status and is accessible by urban as well as nearby rural residents.

With a population of 50,000, the city is one of the largest in Nicaragua. However, there is currently no library for elementary school students and teachers. This project would meet this urgent need by providing essential resources for the educational community, including several class sets of books for grades K-6, reference materials, and guidebooks to improve teaching techniques.

The project has already received a diverse mix of contributions from the local community. Students and parents from the school have donated 475 cement blocks, and all vendors have offered substantial reductions in prices. Local businesses have given money and bags of cement, and NGOs have promised over $2000 in books. The Ministry of Education has also promised to provide a librarian when the project is complete.

A local committee of school administrators, teachers and parents has been hard at work moving this project forward. Please join all of us in bringing a library to our city!
