Working together, staff at ZdravPlus, Fergana, and a Peace Corps Volunteer have authored and designed a brochure on HIV/AIDS in Uzbek. The purpose of the brochure is to educate Uzbek men between the ages of 16 and 25 about the nature of the disease, means of transmission, and methods of protection. The reason this demographic group was chosen is that it is considered a bridge group for transmitting HIV infection. Many young men of this age frequent sex workers, a high risk group for HIV infection. Many young men are migrant workers living in Russia who are likely to get infected from having sex with Russian sex workers, and then return home to infect their Uzbek wives. The brochure employs street language that is familiar with young men, and its format is that of a comic book in order to make it easily readable. Partnership funds are needed to print 10,000 copies of the brochure for distribution to men in this age group.
