I worked in two villages in Andhra Pradesh: Shamshabad, where I was an agriculture extension agent; and Medchal, where I worked with two other volunteers on a joint Peace Corps-CARE mushroom growing project. It was while I was in the latter I met my future wife, Laney, a fellow volunteer working on nutrition and village health projects in nearby Pet. Bashirabad. (We married after our return to the United States.) I also pursued my avocation of birding while I was in India, returning with a list of 318 species. I was a newspaperman in six states before retiring after 30 years and returning to my native Oregon, where I now live in Portland.
