Info about the Girl's Leadership Camp

In Benin there is a strong desire and need to identify young female leaders and have them serve as role models in their respective communities. Young girls are faced with grueling household responsibilities, oppressive social expectations, and lack of encouragment and respect in their culture. However, in Benin many recognize that these social norms are detrimental to progress and the hope for future generations. Peace Corps has been requested to assist a local NGO to organize the first camp for "Girls Leading our World" (GLOW) in Benin. Objectives of these camps are to encourage young women to become active citizens by building their self-esteem and confidence, increasing their awareness and helping develop skills in goal setting, assertiveness, career and life planning. Through activities the participants will build confidence and increase communication and problem solving skills. Girls chosen to attend camps will be from all three ethnic groups, and will come from throughout the Borgou region. There will be 48 campers the first summer, with local volunteers serving as counsellors and teachers and Peace Corps Volunteers providing support and guidance. The staff who will implement the project are members of "Maman Modeles" and EASPED. Women chaperones will be chosen from each village.
