Info about the Girls' Summer Camp

The Girls’ Leadership Camp for three regions in Senegal will bring together 25 of the top middle-school aged girls to work together in heightening their independence, improving leadership skills and becoming strong women who will lead Senegal into the future. The girls will also have the chance to simply have fun, which is unfortunately not a part of most young Senegalese girls’ lives.

These girls will have excelled academically, have a good reputation among their peers and teachers and have shown the motivation to learn and reach for the next level. Five of these girls are being specifically selected by our local partner, UDEN. UDEN is an association of teachers in the Southern Fatick region that works with disadvantaged girls. At the camp, there will be a range of activities including interactive sessions on topics such as personal health, HIV/AIDS and other STDs, careers, and the environment. Other activities like arts and crafts, swimming lessons, skits, team-building and trust games, will be part of the camp curriculum.

The girls will be chosen through an application and interview process from 13 middle schools throughout the regions. The duration of the camp will be one week and will be held at a Conference Center which is located on Delta mangroves, providing an ideal environment not only for swimming activities but also for learning about one of the most important ecological systems in Senegal. The staff will include Peace Corps Volunteers, female Senegalese guest speakers, cooks and female counselors from across the region who have proven themselves to be good role models.
