Description of Service[edit]

I was assigned to work in Tarmatambo, near Tarma, in the central sierra region of Peru. I lived alone in a room where I used a candle for light and a kerosene stove for heat. The latrine was 200 feet away which was inconvenient during this frequent times of "turista" . I was trained in community development and made efforts to bring together community leaders, metizos and Quechua Indians, in order to identify common community problems and to develop plans of action to resolve their problems. For the first three months, I was instructed to listen and develop relationships before attempting to change anything. I made an effort to understand the "agenda" of the community, and then to help them develop strategies for accomplishing their identified goals. A vegetable garden, chicken farm, Guinea pig (cuye) farm were attempted. I taught fourth and fifth grade biology, health and nutrition. I immersed myself in the culture and have memories of many friends. I became familiar with the silent violence of poverty. I worked, danced, laughed and cried with my neighbors.

After one year in Tarmatambo, I transferred to Lima where I worked with an American gynecologist and a Peruvian organization(Christian Family Movement) in the barriada parochial clinics to make oral contraceptives available to Indian peasants.

About Glenn Withrow Today[edit]

I eventually pursued a career in medicine and became a family doctor. Our PCV motto " I help myself by helping others learn to help themselves" is still relevant as I try to help my patients become self reliant. Also, I learned that I must identify my patients' goals and objectives and help them construct a "Plan de accion'" in order for them to become healthy. I learned that I cannot become an "agent of change" in their lives un

less I develop a meaningful relationship with them. This is not always easy. But, like they say, " It was the hardest job I'll ever love."
