Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center (WRBC), Stara Zagora, works diligently to protect biodiversity on the Balkan Peninsula through the rehabilitation and breeding of rare and endangered species. Endangered species on the Peninsula are threatened due to habitat destruction, pollution, pesticides, and other human activities such as poaching and illegal logging. The WRBC works with a range of civil society organizations to mitigate the damages to the fragile web of life in the Balkans, one of the last wild places left in Europe. In this spirit, the WRBC receives injured animals, mostly raptors, from Green Balkans volunteers throughout Bulgaria for treatment and eventual release. Unfortunately the need for WRBC's services has surpassed its capacity to provide those services. For this reason the center is in dire need to expand and modernize its facilities. The proposed project would expand the center by 100% adding an additional 16 new cages and five new natural habitat cages to better assist reintroduction of animals back into the wild. An aviary will also be constructed to allow the flight of larger predatory birds as well as to teach younger birds to fly. Partnership funds are needed for construction materials.
