Guayaquil is the capital of the province of Guayas and the largest city in Ecuador. Affectionately known amongst Ecuador PCVs as "GTown", Guayaquil is also the birthplace of "Beavis and Butthead" creator Mike Judge. Huh, huh. He said "Butthead". Yeah.
During the 90s, Guayaquil was restricted as a Peace Corps site due to crime and other urban dangers. It has since been re-opened as a Peace Corps site, mostly within the Youth and Families Development program.
Volunteers have worked in the barrios of Fertisa, Flor de Bastion, Isla Trinitaria, Nueva Prosperina and Guasmo Sur, among others.
Plan International and INFA (el Instituto de la Niñez y de la Familia) work in Guayaquil, among others.
As a major Ecuadorian city, Guayaquil has buses which leave to almost all parts of the country. A new terminal terrestre (bus terminal) was recently opened in Guayaquil (affectionately known to volunteers as "el Super Terminal"). Flights leaving to the Galápagos Islands generally leave from Guayaquil.
As a coastal site, Guayaquil tends to be very warm and rainy during January through March (which is amplified by the enormous amount of concrete in the city).
