Info about the Health Association Capacity Building
The Association of Community Health Agents in a rural community in Senegal aims to increase the presence of health workers in rural communities in order to spread health education and knowledge. Comprised of 22 trained health educators and midwives, the association has been working with 11 villages in the area educating communities on various health topics, including disease prevention, nutrition, prenatal care, and vaccinations. On days when the association holds health classes in a village, they also conduct a “set settal”, or village clean-up. The set settal includes removing weeds, standing water, and trash in order to prevent disease, snakes, and the spread of wildfires. The association has also recently begun a mango orchard in order to establish a sustainable source of income to continue their activities.
While their work has been well received over the past year, the association’s activities are impeded by a lack of supplies and transportation. Currently, many association members are unable to attend activities because they cannot access some of the more distant villages and do not have the supplies needed to participate in the set settal.
To address these obstacles and serve the rural community, this proposal aims to assist the association in procuring bicycles and basic gardening supplies, including wheelbarrows, rakes, and gardening gloves. The association has identified these items as essential for their work in the community and has committed to paying 25% of the total cost. These seemingly small changes will allow every association member the opportunity to fully participate in activities and will have a large impact on the entire community.
