Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, the community of Mykolayiv, Ukraine has been hit hard by economic difficulties. Formerly a major shipbuilding center, many of Mykolayiv's residents have lost their jobs as orders for ships have all but disappeared. As a result, the amount of public funding available for the school systems in very limited. Schools cannot afford to buy enough books so that each student can work from their own copy. Students are forced to share books in the classroom and are rarely, if ever, allowed to take the books home. Consequently, students do not have the ability to develop independent study skills. Partnership funds are needed to purchase enough books that each child will have his or her own copy of the language book they need to study. English, French, German, Russian, and Ukrainian language books will be purchased. The schools will own the copies of the books, collect them from students at the end of the year and distribute to the following years students. The community has managed to raise just over 25% of the total project cost.
