The Peace Corps established a program in Nepal in 1962 and placed the first group of 100 Volunteers in education and agriculture assignments. To date, over 4,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in a wide variety of programs to assist the government of Nepal in delivering essential services to the Nepalese. The deteriorating security situation forced Peace Corps/Nepal to reduce its training input in Fiscal Year 2000 and again in Fiscal Year 2002. During our visit, 101 Volunteers and 36 Trainees were in Nepal. Due to the recent Maoists threats, the post closed the training site in Rupandehi District and moved the Trainees to Kathmandu to complete their training.
