No Wealth Without Health

Purpose and Approach

As an ongoing part of the HIV/AIDS and basic health education to the Organic Mango Outgrowers Association (OMOA) farmers and their communities, the Peace Corps Volunteers involved with this project are proposing a forty community Know Your Status Campaign. Over a five-month period, a number of Health and Water Sanitation Volunteers, HIV/AIDS Peer Educators (previously educated through PEPFAR-funded workshops), PLWA representatives and nurses from the Ghana Health Services (GHS) will visit each of the communities with an OMOA farm. With the aid of the District Ministries of Information, each evening of education will include: a film on HIV/AIDS in the local language (Dagbani), a presentation and discussion on stigma by a Person Living With AIDS, a presentation on basic HIV/AIDS information by a Peer Educator and simultaneous Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) by nurses from GHS.

The primary goal of providing voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) to all participating community members will be achieved by bringing VCT-trained nurses and testing kits to each community and organizing the interested community members to come and get tested. The communities will be informed of the event using banners, radio, gong-gong beaters, and by making announcements at the local mosques.

As a secondary goal of this project, the dissemination of HIV/AIDS-related information will occur through the screening of a Dagbanli HIV/AIDS and family planning film, peer educator-led discussions and presentations, and a PLWA testimony. Similarly, the attempt to decrease the stigmatization of HIV/AIDS in the participating communities will involve the PLWA testimony. The respective districts Ministry of Information offices will be contacted to provide the necessary technical support for the film showing. Peer educators from a previously held peer educator workshop will be organized and gathered beforehand to discuss logistics as well as presentation and discussion topics and methods.

Also, to address the third goal, the Northern Region PLWA group representative will be contacted in order to identify PLWA’s living in the necessary districts and arrange for them to come and give testimony.

Background Information

This is part of an ongoing project from the health volunteers assigned to the Organic Mango Outgrower Association (OMOA) in the Northern Region of Ghana that has been designed to benefit the farmers and their communities. This phase of the project will include a “Know Your Status” campaign, coupled with numerous HIV/AIDS educational opportunities in each of the 40 communities in which OMOA operates.

Project Reflection and Sustainability

Reports will be compiled after each community’s event that will include the number of people tested and the results as well as the overall attendance for the event. We will also discuss with the peer educators and PLWHA the various successes and failures of the program in order to improve future projects and events. Informal interviews will be conducted with the attendees to gauge their response to the information presented to them. These will all be used to evaluate the impact of the campaign in accordance with our aforementioned goals.
