Info about the Plan Today, Live Tomorrow: Teaching Sexual and Reproductive Responsibility in Secondary Schools

Nicaragua has the highest adolescent fertility rate in all of Central America, with nearly one third of all pregnancies occurring in women under 20 years of age. One third of annual maternal deaths are also among women in this age group. In addition, Nicaragua, though historically faced with a lower rate of HIV than neighboring countries, has seen increasing rates of the disease in recent years. With 92% of young adult men and 67% of adolescent women engaging in sexual activity before the age of 20, there exists a significant need for sexual and reproductive health education.

This project will provide sexual and reproductive health education to secondary school students in a northern municipality in Nicaragua. Funding from the Ministries of Education and Health, along with Partnership money, will be used to create a packet of didactic materials and activities related to sexual and reproductive health that teachers can incorporate into existing course content and structure. Materials will be given to 66 high school teachers who will, in turn, teach lessons to 3198 students. Funding will also encourage small, student-initiated, community-based health projects in various communities as part of the curriculum in 2009.
