Country:

Mali (2004-2006)

Primary-Site:

Bilaje

Sector/Work:

NRM, Literacy

I worked extensivly with the local women's group by improving their community garden and teaching literacy classes for the local language Bambara. Examples of improvements to the garden include well repair, planting live fencing (made up of henna), and donating numerous fruit trees that were grown in my tree nurseries. I also taught english at a neighboring village. I worked with the local tree association by planting a couple of tree nurseries, both with the group and on my own. Overall I planted about 200 trees. I also managed the rabbit association and raised rabbits myself. Finally, my big project was obtaining funds and supplies for, and coordinating and helping with, the construction of a literacy center in the town I was posted in. Upon completiong of my service I received an advanced rating in Bambara.
