[edit] Description of Service

I worked in a rural farming/fishing community of 50,000 at the southern tip of the island of Negros Oriental. When I arrived in this community back in July of 1983, the US Peace Corps informed all volunteers that they no longer could own or even drive a motorcycle. If we were caught, we would be sent home. Volunteers in my group did have to go home because of this. Because our means of transportation was limited to public or walking the area that I helped serve became a much smaller area. I worked out of the Mayor's office, hospital outreach and the local school systems. I helped with recreation projects, education projects and self help fund raising projects. When I left the country in September of 1985, I had a farewell party thrown for me in which more than 500 people were present. It was the greatest 2.5 years of my life.

After I left the Peace Corps, I had no desire to work for the government in any way. For the first 10 years after I was out I worked in Hotel Management. After my time spent traveling, I guess working the hospitality industry made sense. I left the hotel industry and for the last 10 years I have been selling real estate. My days in the Peace Corps left me with that desire to be my own boss and this is what real estate has allowed me to do.

I met my wife in Siaton. We got married in the Philippines 6 months after my tour of duty was completed. We have traveled back to the Philippines 4 times since I have worked there. It has been amazing to see how much my town has changed. When I was there I would have to travel 30 miles just to make a phone call home to America. Today, I can sit on the computer at my in-laws homes and talk for free via skype. We have seen people we know come visit us here in Milwaukee. Many educated friends of my wife are currently living in the US. Today the community I worked in has grown to about $80,000, with a couple of cell towers in the middle of town. It is a comfortable town that is still a farming and fishing community.
