Info about the Safety in the Workplace

This community, known as the jewelry capital of Morocco, is home to approximately 200 silversmiths. These jewelers are superbly talented people who work with some very unsophisticated machinery. This equipment, on the whole, is rudimentary at best, contains no protective shields and, in most cases, is creatively adapted or enhanced. Unfortunately, close to none of the jewelers use any form of safety measures while working on this equipment.

The Association President discussed the issue with the Ministry however they responded by saying that they will not supply funds for protective equipment. The jewelers, due to cost constraints and no training in the availability or need for safety equipment, will not purchase equipment on their own. Seeking outside funding appears to be the only avenue available to the jewelers to receive safety equipment and training.

Your donation will provide the jewelers in this community with one pair of tinted and one pair of clear safety goggles and 2 protective masks. The equipment will be administered to the jewelers during a Safety in the Workplace workshop where the local hospital emergency room physician and an optometrist will discuss the need to wear safety equipment while using machinery and teach some basic first aide. The local artisanat and association will provide all organizational and communication needs with the jewelers, a meeting area and materials for the workshop.
