Info about the Secondary School Classrooms
The local Secondary School is the main secondary school for five surrounding villages in the central hills of Benin and is in need of assistance. Each year enrollment rates have continued to rise, putting pressure on existing classroom space and leaving the school with inadequate facilities. Since 2005 the library and all the resources associated with that building have had to be used as a make-shift and insufficient classroom. With enrollment rates sure to jump in the coming years due to new government education initiatives, classroom management is becoming more difficult and space for students hard to find. 5 years ago the Secondary School began to build a new building with 3 classrooms but part-way through, ran out of funding. Now the community is ready to begin work again, opening up needed classroom space, which will in turn produce higher passing rates and test scores due to the better learning environment. The library too will be liberated to be used not only for study and extracurricular functions, but also as an information technology center with computers that have already been donated to the community.
This project would benefit not only the students and faculty in the essential goals of education of primary subjects, but would also give students and other faculty members a chance to be involved in the development of their community. It would provide the immeasurable resource of computer experience not only to the students, but to members of the community, and would re-open the schools’ library.
Note: This summary was provided by a Peace Corps Volunteer and the community administering this project.
