The goal of the 2005 Girls Bike Tour (Tour des Filles) is to promote the education of women and girls. Tour des Filles will expand the existing efforts of a national teacher's volunteer association (CDEP-SCOFI) and a local NGO (TOTSAN) through a five-day cycling tour to promote girls' education and health along the 90km road from Senegal's border with The Gambia at Karang to the heart of the Senegalese peanut farmers, Kaolack. The riders will consist of 11 girls from rural villages, among others, and each day will include a stop at a designated village where a local theater troop will perform interactive skits focused on education and health issues. Along with the intent to increase support for girls' education, Tour des Filles is also a means for raising funds for educational scholarships to girls in need. CDEP-SCOFI will be administering this scholarship fund. Partnership funds are being requested to help with the preparation costs for such an endeavor. Volunteer Coordinator(s) E. Long of DE and A. Quady of CA
