About John Lemon Today
Before I joined the Peace Corps I had traveled as a military dependent. So traveling wasn't new to me. However, when I went to Niger, I was still pretty naive concerning some things. By the time I came home a couple of years later, I had gained a great love for the people I served. I know I brought home a piece of them and I would like to think I left a piece of me behind. Because of my Peace Corps service, when I joined the Air Force the following year, I enlisted into the air transportation career field. In the 21 years I served in the Air Force I was privileged to serve in six humanitarian missions: Haiti, Somalia, the Kurds in Northern Iraq, the Ayamara Indians in Bolivia, and Bosnia-Herzogovina, and Kosovo. I also taught in various locations in the US and overseas. I taught on two Indian Reservations, did an ESL workshop in Ayamaya, Bolivia, taught at a private school in Saudi Arabia, taught English and literacy skills at a refugee resettlement agency in Salt Lake City, Utah; served as the vice president of the International Development Organization at the University of Utah, served as the co-founder and vice president of the Center for Humanitarian Outreach and Intercultural Exchange, taught English in two youth crisis centers, and at one of those centers I was the Principal. I owe part of my interest now in the Third World to my growing up in the Air Force and part to my service in the Peace Corps. Currently I am retired from both the Air Force and Education. I'm working at a local grocery store, taking courses online in counter-terroism, and continuing my writing. I married in 1988 and have one son who graduted form Wasatch High School in 2007 and is also in college at Utah Valley State University. We live in Midway, Utah. My wife, Raneva, has taught 37 years and someday she plans on retiring as well.
