Info about the Community Library

In a rural mountain community in the Dominican Republic, residents are facing a dilemma: many local children want to read, but they have no books with which to do so!

To solve this problem, a team of enthusiastic teachers from the local school have formed a library committee and now seek assistance in forming a small library within the school. The project objectives are simple. They wish to buy bookshelves, books and chairs, and set up a small library in an unused room of the community school. The committee members will maintain the library, assuring that the books are in order and well cared for, and that children as well as adults have a place in the community where they feel empowered to explore books and improve their literacy rates.

The community contribution includes time and effort on the part of the committee, and space, bookshelves, and chairs which will be donated by the school. Once the community has the books that they need, we are confident that the new library will become a lively and integral part of the community, and will play a pivotal role in furthering the education of children and adults alike.
