I worked in the Lycee-College de Koundara as a high school math teacher for the two years I was in the Peace Corps. In addition to teaching (when school was actually in session)I also helped to form and oversee a Peer Educator Group with the other volunteers in my area. We had a group of 20 students from my school that were trained in methods for how to educate about HIV/AIDS and STDs. While I was in Koundara they did various sensibilizations at the nearby villages (including Youkoukoun, Sareiboido and Sambaillo). We also organized events in the Koundara center which including a poetry contest and reading as well as a soirée with a skit and condom demonstration during an intermission. Besides these two main projects I also formed a girls volleyball team, which quickly turned into a boys volleyball team and then both a boys and girls volleyball team, organized a town tournament for them each year and at the end of the year helped to build a volleyball/basketball court at the school (with money that the school that had just hired me, Savannah Country Day School, sent over. My second year I also completed the world map project on the back of the butchers shop in the town square with a group of interested students.
