Info about the Pelonola Skills Training and Community Integration

Although South Africa prides itself on being a diverse nation, there still exist groups of people who are discriminated against and isolated from society. One of these groups is the physically and mentally impaired. This is especially true in rural areas of the scountry, where people have less access and opportunities than those in urban areas.

A rural school in Pelonola has designed a project to empower learners with useful skills while benefiting the community and school. Fundamental to the plan is integrating those with special needs into the community and increasing awareness and acceptance of others. This project is centered around teaching physically and mentall impaired learners a variety of vocational skills and then provide these services to the broader community. Learners will acquire sills involved in baking, washing cars, and doing laundry.

Partnership funds will be used to aid with all of the skill sets learned. The community will be providing 28% of the total cost.
