Info about the Summer Day Camp

The project team’s goal is to provide 35 community children with educational, constructive, and fun activities for 4 weeks this summer. The Peace Corps Volunteers living in the community and a local partner organization will host a summer day camp for local youth, ages 13-17. Each week will be devoted to different subject matter including: games and sports, environmental protection, healthy lifestyle choices, and artistic expression through arts and crafts.

Activities will be varied and cover a large range of topics in a 4 week span. Information on drugs, cigarettes, nutrition, exercise, AIDS prevention, environmental problems, litter prevention, among other topics will be provided. As part of the arts and crafts week, the children will design and paint a mural in a public area. There are currently no murals in the community, and this will not only create public art, but will also provide a way for the youth to interact with other community members.

Following the camp the attendees will:

Have new knowledge on the effects of narcotics and cigarettes, AIDS, nutritious diets, adequate exercise, litter prevention, and environmental sustainability that they will implement in their everyday lives.

Have increased the youth presence and civic engagement through the creation of a culturally appropriate public mural.

Partnership funds will be used primarily towards supplies for the mural, kite-building, piñata-making, and tie-dying as well as the Health Week activities. Some materials unavailable in Azerbaijan must be purchased from the United States, and Partnership funds will also cover shipping costs.
