Info about the Teaching Supplements for Secondary School

In a village of fewer than 2,500 people, about 600 children attend the local secondary school. Most of the families in the village rely on agriculture and animal husbandry as their primary source of income yielding an average monthly income of 3,000 soms per month (about $75). There is no fee for attending the local school, but all school supplies, books and furniture must be purchased or rented by the students. This means that if a student does not have the required funds to purchase/rent textbooks he or she will remain without the proper teaching supplements throughout the year.

The school is currently working on collecting funds for English textbooks, and PCPP assistance is requested for the purchase of Kyrgyz-English dictionaries and blackboards. Dictionaries are a much needed supplement to English lessons that are too expensive for the average family to afford, and new blackboards will be a welcomed change to the old faded blackboards that have been used since before the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The people of this village are willing to put forth effort to help themselves but also understand the limitations that exist in their situation. This project’s intention is to help the school accomplish its own set goals.
