Info about the Uganda School Computer Upgrade

This project aims to upgrade the computers and to better utilize the new school projector in the computer lab at the primary teachers’ college.

In 2006 and 2008 monetary contributions from the school administration and pupils of the school were used to install and subsequently update their computer lab. The computer center was located on the campus adjacent to local language cultural center. The lab initially consisted of ten desktop computers with monitors and a printer. In 2008, the computer lab was improved by the addition of ten desktop computers with monitors and a LCD projector.

The biggest obstacle to the pupils using these computers on a regular basis is the lack of computer memory. The desktop computers purchased by the college only have 128mb of memory, the desktop computers have long loading times and cannot run many of the educational programs such as encyclopedias, MS Office, etc. the long loading times also create problems as the classes are only one hour and it takes 5-10 minutes from turning on the computer to actually using it. Many students who are not used to using computers believe they have done something wrong and will improperly shut down the computers and restart them causing more delays.

Part of this year’s purchase by the college was an LCD projector. The projector allows the college tutors to create presentations for their classes easily. It also helps the tutors practice their computer skills. The difficulty with the LCD projector is that it requires a computer to be connected to it. Therefore the projector can only be used in the computer lab. The purchase of a laptop to be used with the LCD project will make the unit mobile so it can be loaned out to the tutors for use in the classrooms.
