A rural neighborhood in Costa Rica annually needs improvement in its public water infrastructure to bring running water to its growing community, due to the lack of water in the summer months. This project aims to construct a new water tank in this small neighborhood.

The existing water tank was constructed in the late 1960’s to serve two towns and is no longer sufficient to support the number of inhabitants in these towns. The approximate number of households in the community at that time was a mere 50 families. Today, the number of households receiving water exceeds 150, consuming more water for private tanks. This increase in demand and lack of a large-scale, water-storage device has caused several waterless days for all town members during the summer months, for several years now.

The Street Maintenance Committee of the neighborhood has decided to take action in order to alleviate the water shortage and the potentially grave health risks associated with not having potable water. They hope to better the living situations of all community members. Through the efforts of this one committee, a new well is under construction to supply water to the main tank when the holding level runs low. Also, the committee has been given approval to construct a smaller tank specifically for their neighborhood. The national government water agency is supplying some of the construction material and the community is requesting Partnership Program support for the remainder of the materials needed to construct a new water tank.
